The Experience

Riding is a unique sport because, unlike other sports, men and women can compete on equal terms. It is a sport which can be learned as a child, or as a mature adult, and riders can continue to enjoy the sport into their seventies. Unlike many other sports, you can continue riding and improving your skills for a lifetime.

It is important to be taught well from the beginning. Establishing good core skills early on is essential, and every ride will bring new knowledge.

Bukit Timah Saddle Club’s riding school has over 30 well trained horses and ponies. Our instructors are fully qualified, offering the highest standards of tuition.  Our school horses range in size from 16.2hh warmbloods from Europe to slender Thoroughbreds. We also have a much loved selection of ponies suitable for our very young riders, from 12hh upwards.  Our horses and ponies vary in standard to suit both the beginner, intermediate and more experienced rider. As riders’ skills advance over time, they can be teamed up with horses schooled to compete at 120cm in show jumping and up to elementary in dressage.

BTSC offers lessons at all levels six days a week (closed on Mondays) in both dressage and show-jumping. Riders can chose private lessons, semi-private lessons (2 persons) or group lessons (groups of 3 or more people). Lesson times are:

Daily – Tuesday to Sunday - 7.00 am – 10.00am and 3.30 pm – 7.00 pm.

BTSC also offers numerous courses and regular camps throughout the year, to enhance riding and horse care at all levels. Many of these courses are open to non-members. Please contact riding school on (65) 6466 2264 for further information.

Happy Hackers

A newly introduced option at BTSC, by popular demand, is our Happy Hackers programme, which is an excellent way of meeting other people and enjoying the many acres of lush tropical surroundings which BTSC is privileged to have at its doorstep. Our trusted and willing horses will ensure you have a thoroughly enjoyable ride. Hacking is available six mornings a week (Tuesday – Sunday) or join our regular Friday morning hacking group which is open to both members and non-members.

Competitions

At BTSC, we also encourage our riders to build their confidence and measure what they have learned through our regular in-house and inter-club competitions. The pre-show preparation of plaiting and getting the horse ready for competition is another valuable learning curve. In addition to dressage and show jumping, there are always a variety of classes both in-hand and ridden, and the gymkhanas are enormously popular fun events where children are involved in a variety of horseback games suitable for all abilities. These activities are the perfect way to develop important skills such as balance.

Amateur Racing

This sport was popular for many years at BTSC, and suitable training grounds are still available.  Regular amateur meetings are held in Malaysia, organized by the Malayan Amateur Racing Association (MARA). However, the free movement of horses between Singapore and Malaysia was stopped in 1999 due to the outbreak of the Nipah virus in Malaysia. Unfortunately, these restrictions remain in force and consequently the interest in Amateur Racing for horses based in Singapore has decreased because of the quarantine requirements and associated costs.
